Making Nets Work March
2008
|
|
Thank you for subscribing to my newsletter. This
month I have news about progress along two fronts you
may be interested in: ACE and Apache Qpid
(AMQP).
I've also noted that the latest survey of ACE
platforms is now open - read more about why this is
important.
As always, be sure to forward this note to other
people you work with to be sure they know what's
happening in the world of networked application
development.

| Apache Qpid Promotion to Top-Level
Project |
In the January
2008 newsletter I mentioned AMQP, a message queuing
protocol that's grabbing lots of attention. Qpid
is a project sponsored by the Apache Software Foundation
to implement an open source, AMQP-compliant client and
broker. Apache projects start out in what they call
"incubation." Incubation is required of all newly
accepted projects until a further review indicates that
the infrastructure, communications, and decision-making
processes have stabilized in a manner consistent with
other successful Apache projects.
I've been
paying close attention to activities on the Qpid project
and am happy to report that the project has progressed
to the point where the project team has proposed that
Qpid graduate to an official top level project at
Apache. They have proposed a resolution achiving this
graduation be presented to the Apache Software
Foundation board for consideration at the next board
meeting. Congrats, Qpid! So what does this
mean for you? If you encounter a system or application
that uses some form of message queuing, AMQP and Qpid
may be able to help you get a quality system up quickly.
Think this may be something you can use? Give me a call
to talk about it! |
| ACE 5.7 Release Planned This Summer
|
The next release of ACE, version
5.7, has been planned for this summer. This release will
have many fixes and improvements to more modern
computing platforms.
As with all ACE releases,
ACE 5.7's release will trigger a change to Riverace's
supported ACE versions. Standard support service covers
the current and most recent release. Thus, when ACE 5.7
is released, 5.6 and 5.7 will become the supported
versions. ACE 5.5 will no longer be covered by standard
support at that time.
Also, in preparation for
this release, Riverace is surveying support customers
about platforms that are currently in use. If you are a
Riverace support customer and have not yet received
notice of the April 2008 ACE Platforms Survey, please
contact me right away to be sure your platforms
are recorded.
Are you concerned your
platforms may not be supported in the future? Riverace
maintains ACE on its list of supported platforms as long
as a requiem of support customers are using the
platform. The best way to be sure your platforms stay
supported is to obtain support. Please contact me to
discuss your needs, your ACE platform usage plans, and
how we can help you.

| Do You Need Help Designing Your
Next System? |
Nobody has to tell you that
designing a well-formed, efficient, maintainable
networked application is hard. You've had to deal with
it. The problem is that networking functionality is
usually in a supporting role to your system's main
purposes, and your skills and experience are much better
used to focus on specific business and technology
issues. It may make more sense to bring in seasoned
expertise to help design a solid networking base in your
next system.
I've helped many companies get great
networked applications built - I may be able to help you
as well. Let's talk and see if I can help take care of
the networking, and let you focus on applying your
expertise and experience to the business features
that'll really help your system stand out.

me at 508-541-9180 or email me at shuston@riverace.com.

If you have any ideas for areas of networked
programming you'd like to hear about in future issues,
please email me with your suggestions. In the meantime,
keep those nets working!
Sincerely,
